Barrington shoots down Schaumburg

Barrington used great outside shooting and strong team defense to defeat visiting Schaumburg 64-39 on Friday night in Mid-Suburban League West action.

The Broncos sank eight 3-pointers in the game, and junior guard Tyler Weathered led the way from beyond the arc by sinking 5 in the first half.

“I was getting open looks with my teammates setting screens and (point guard) Brad (Zaumseil) was keeping his head up like he always does,” Weathered said. “He kept feeding me the ball, and I got wide-open shots. And I’m going to knock them down if I have them.”

Weathered scored a game-high 17 points, and also had 7 rebounds. Barrington (11-6, 2-2) showed off some offensive balance against the Saxons (6-8, 2-2) in the second half when Schaumburg switched its defensive focus to the red-hot Weathered.

After intermission, junior forward Mark Bennett scored 10 of his 14 points, junior forward John Schneider scored all 8 of his points, and senior guard Greg Gerrard scored 7 of his 11 points.

“We have numerous guys who could all be the leading scorer of the team,” Bennett said. “Finding the balance is something I don’t know if we had done completely yet. (Friday night) I think we did that.”

Schneider went out of the game early with two quick fouls, and Weathered was able to step up his offense when that happened.

“We have a lot of weapons on our team,” Weathered said. “If one person is down somebody can step up just as well as the guy who stepped out. Anybody can step up and play their role in games.”

Zaumseil was the set-up man for the Broncos offense, dishing out 6 assists and scoring 4 points.

“I thought we did a better job of moving the ball, and being smart,” Barrington coach Bryan Tucker said. “We were taking good shots as opposed to some rushed shots.”

The Saxons’ offense struggled with inconsistency all game. Every time it looked like they were going to get rolling, the Broncos defense bottled them up.

Senior guard Javon McDonald led Schaumburg in scoring with 15 points. Sophomore guard Kyle Bolger scored 9 points, and sophomore center Jimmy Lundquist scored 7 points for the Saxons.

“It was just an old-fashioned butt-whooping,” Schaumburg coach Matt Walsh said. “We didn’t come ready to play, and they played very well.”
