Streamwood's zone contains Hoffman
There wasn't a lot of scoring, but Streamwood used a tricky zone defense and a key scoring spree that overlapped halftime to defeat host Hoffman Estates 35-31 on Wednesday night in nonconference play.
"We did a lot of good things," Streamwood coach Tim Jones said. "We finally looked in the post. We got some good shots in the post. We need to be a smarter team, but it was a nice win."
Forward Mike Montgomery led the Sabres with 11 points and 8 rebounds, and Jones said brothers Josh and Zach Harris, who are both forwards, played strong games even though they only scored 2 points each.
The big factor for Streamwood (3-7) defensively was its 3-2 zone defense, which really bottled up the Hoffman offense.
The Sabres started off the game playing man-to-man, but switched to the zone in the second quarter and played it for the rest of the game with the exception of a couple possessions. The Hawks (1-6) scored 12 points in the first quarter against man-to-man defense by Streamwood and just 19 points for the rest of the game against the zone.
Hoffman's offensive star was junior guard Austin Terry. He scored a game-high 17 points and also grabbed 9 rebounds. Early in the second quarter Terry picked up his second foul and did not play again until the start of the second half.
Starting in the second quarter and lasting until the midway point of the third quarter, Streamwood went on a 16-6 run to break open a 7-point lead.
"We just couldn't overcome it," Hoffman coach Bill Wandro said of that run. "And mainly it was because our shooting percentage was really bad."
Junior center Eric Saubert had 7 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks.
"Our shooting percentage was very bad," Wandro said. "The only thing we can do is not get down about it, come back and play the next game, and get a little more confidence in our shooting."
