District 200 to receive Borders gift cards presented by Secretary of State Jesse White

Later this afternoon, Secretary of State Jesse White will present Community Unit School District 200 Borders gift cards in the amount of $1,139 at a literacy reception at the Borders Michigan Ave.

Earlier this fall, CUSD 200 partnered with the Illinois Literacy Foundation, the Secretary of State's Office, and Borders Bookstore on a statewide promotion. The gift cards are made possible due to the generosity of Borders' customers and to the success of the 2010 Literacy Donation Program in our community.

With the donation of gift cards, CUSD 200 will be able to purchase an additional book for approximately 200 summer book bags. Summer book bags contain age appropriate reading materials for CUSD 200's most challenged reading and most needy students. In total, CUSD 200 distributes between 600 to 800 summer book bags before school lets out for the summer.

According to Superintendent Dr. Brian Harris, “We are very thankful to Borders, the Illinois Literacy Foundation, and the Secretary of State's Office for this great donation. Our student population continues to change and every day we strive to meet and exceed the educational needs of our students. This donation will allow us to meet and exceed that need throughout the summer months.”
