Lakes tops Oswego in OT

Lakes' girls basketball team got its new season off to a great start Saturday.

The Eagles opened up at Geneva playing Oswego, which finished fourth in the Class 3A state tournament last year, and won 59-53 in overtime.

Lakes went down by 12 points in the first half but climbed back in and trailed by only one at halftime.

The Eagles had a huge second quarter from Ashley Cunningham, who scored 10 points to spark the comeback.

With the score tied 37-37 entering the fourth quarter, Lakes fell behind and trailed by five with 45 seconds to go. But junior Katie Brinser had a bucket and free throw to trim the Eagles' deficit to two. The Eagles then stole the inbounds pass and Ashley Parmly hit the tying bucket with 4 seconds to go.

The overtime was all Lakes, which outscored Oswego 8-2.

Lakes shot 43 free throws, making 23.

“We were the aggressors today and the stats showed this,” Lakes coach Pete Schneider said.

Lakes' leading scorer was Terese McMahon with 16 points. Cunningham and Parmly added 13 and 12, respectively. Brinser tallied 8 points, while Evan Morris had 8 rebounds and 6 points.

Parmly's 8 rebounds were key, too, said Schneider, who also praised Sara Berry's defense and rebounding.

“I am so proud of these kids,” Schneider said. “They have worked hard. They get along great, show no jealousy, and have stay focused. What a fun way to start off the season.”
