Fremd's tenacious defense denies Dundee-Crown
It was a good news, bad news night for the Dundee-Crown girls basketball team.
The good news was the Chargers shot 56 percent from the field, connecting on 14 of 25. D-C was also 4 of 5 from 3-point range.
The bad news was Dundee-Crown committed 33 turnovers.
The result was a 63-33 win for Fremd over the host Chargers in action at the Dundee-Crown Girls Thanksgiving Tournament in Carpentersville Friday night.
"Their pressure is so intense," said D-C coach Michelle Russell of Fremd. "They pick up full court and don't give you a lot of room. To my girls' credit they didn't get rattled and kept their composure and stayed in the game."
After a putback by Diamond Williams, the Chargers were within 10, 39-29, with 7:22 remaining.
The Chargers (0-3) couldn't get any closer.
Forcing 6 turnovers, the Vikings (2-0) scored 12 consecutive points to take a 22-point lead, 51-29, with 4:33 left.
Making all 6 shots during the pivotal run, the Vikes were led by 4 points each by Jessi Wiedemann and Ashley McConnell.
McConnell led the Vikes with 15 points while Megan Gray (11 rebounds) and Jamie Groot (9 boards) had 11 points each.
"Our press was very effective tonight," said Fremd coach Dave Yates. "We want to make it hard for opponents to bring the ball up court every trip. We also did a great job of getting turnovers and easy baskets off our press. I like our balanced scoring. We have kids coming off the bench who can score. It is early in the season but I like the way we are playing."
Ali Sanders paced the Chargers with 8 points including a 3-pointer while Klaudia Tabor scored 7.
Lake Zurich 56, CL South 35: Brittany Pittas led CL South (0-2) with 18 points in this loss at the Dundee-Crown tournament. Stephanie Melone added 10 points for the Gators.
