Scouting Benet boys basketball

Benet

Coach: Gene Heidkamp.

Last year: 26-4, 13-0, first in East Suburban Catholic Conference; lost 58-50 to Simeon in Class 4A Hinsdale Central supersectional.

Top players: Dave Sobolewski, sr., G; Frank Kaminsky, sr., C; Matt Parisi, sr., G; Pat McInerney, so., F; Pat Boyle, sr., F; James Roemer, sr., F; Kevin Doyle, sr., G; Sean O’Mara, fr., F.

Scouting report: The sky’s the limit as the core of last season’s sectional title team returns. Sobolewski, a Northwestern-bound point guard who averaged 16 points and 6 rebounds, joins Kaminsky, a near 7-footer who’s headed to Wisconsin, as one of the state’s top 1-2 punches. Lockdown defender and 3-point shooter Parisi proved invaluable in last year’s playoff run. McInerney, 6-foot-7 Roemer and 6-8 O’Mara add to a powerful front line. Because of rematches with Glenbard East and Simeon and a trip to the Proviso West holiday tournament, it may be tough for Benet to match last season’s record. Don’t be fooled. This team has legitimate dreams of Peoria. “We have some attention on us, but we still have a lot of work to do,” Heidkamp said.
