Cheap stuff: Campfire, R&B, Norwegian fest

Now that's a fire!

Experience the tradition of sitting beside a warm campfire with family and friends at the Family Campfire event at the Greenbelt Cultural Center's Greenbelt Forest Preserve in North Chicago. Guests can take part in singing, dancing, drumming and storytelling. They can also roast marshmallows and create s'mores for snacks. Participants should bring blankets or chairs for seating and should meet at the forest preserve's Shelter D before the event.

Celebrating Norway's heritage

The Sons of Norway Skjold Lodge in Palatine presents the 20th annual Norwegian Heritage Fest. The event features home-baked Norwegian foods, folk craft displays and sales, knitting, rosemaling (Norwegian painting) and wood-carving. Other highlights include musical entertainment, a folk costume fashion show and children's activities.

Mother's Club looks to the holidays

The Mother's Club of Geneva hosts its annual Holiday Arts and Crafts Show, featuring a luncheon, bake sale and raffle drawing. Proceeds will benefit local families in need.

Musical tribute to veterans

Judson University's Symphonic Band presents a Veteran's Day tribute concert. Selections include “The Vanished Army,” the “Band of Brothers Symphonic Suite” and more. Judson president Jerry Cain narrates Aaron Copland's orchestral work, “Lincoln Portrait,” which includes excerpts from a number of famous Abraham Lincoln documents, including the “Gettysburg Address.”
