Scouting Lincoln-Way East at Glenbard West
No. 3 Lincoln-Way East (9-1) at No. 2 Glenbard West (9-1)
Class 7A
Game time: 1 p.m. Saturday.
Last week: Lincoln-Way East 17, Thornton 7; Glenbard West 51, Plainfield North 12.
Outlook: Ever since Lincoln-Way East lost to Wheaton North in Week 2 the Griffins have been happily laying in the weeds while winning eight straight. They line up in a typically run-oriented, double-wing offense, but the strength of the unit is quarterback Blake Winkler, who has thrown for nearly 1,800 yards. Receiver J.J. Robertson, who caught 2 touchdown passes last week, is a deep threat. Glenbard West proved it could stymie the run last week even as run-stuffers Tommy Schutt and Mike Laning were used sparingly due to minor injuries. In this one it'll be up to linemen Schutt and Zack Marshall to apply quarterback pressure. Offensively, Hilltoppers running backs Nick Burrello and Kendall Johnson are as fast as they come. Last week they combined for 263 rushing yards led by Burrello's 194. The passing combo of quarterback Daver Glawe and Mark Hiben, perhaps the area's most sure-handed receiver, accounted for 8 catches and 101 yards.
Advancement: Winner advances to play Saturday's winner between No. 4 Wheaton North (8-2) and No. 1 WW South (10-0).
