Maine E choir, orchestra concert Tuesday night

Variety and energy promise to mark Maine East High School's Fall Choir and Orchestra Concert, to be performed Tuesday, October 19 in East's Auditorium.

Choral Director Ben Avci said that nearly 100 students in various choirs will offer different genres and time periods, from Baroque to modern pop, with instrumental accompaniment from drums and bass guitar as well as accompaniment from members of the Maine East Rhythm Project.

“We'll have some different styles and even different cultural types of music, Avci said.

Among the pieces performed will be Louis Armstrong's “What a Wonderful World and the closing number of Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks' “No Air, sung by all choir members.

For the Orchestra portion, Director Sarah Djordjevic says their first concert of the year is an exciting one.

“We have a lot of young groups ready to perform, she said. “ We're doing some really challenging music because we're stepping it up this year, working hard to prepare ourselves for a tour in the spring in Atlanta. The kids are excited and working hard.

Tuesday's event will feature a pair of symphonic orchestras and a string orchestra. The string orchestra will perform a toccatina by composer and Chicago native William Hofeldt.

Other featured pieces include a selection from Baroque composer Georg Telemann's “Don Quixote and a folk tune by Percy Fletcher, which Djordjevic describes as “a great piece with lots of tempo changes.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Maine East auditorium. Admission is free. Maine East is at 2601 W. Dempster St. in Park Ridge.
