Literary Tea to Promote Literacy in Glen Ellyn Nov. 9

Mawi Asgedom is a former Ethiopian refugee who has inspired millions through his story and his insights, He has written six books including his bestselling memoir, Of Beetles and Angels: A Boy's Remarkable Journey From A Refugee Camp to Harvard. Mawi overcame a childhood torn by civil war in East Africa. He came to America and lived on welfare in Wheaton, Illinois. Despite many cultural and financial challenges, he earned a full tuition scholarship to Harvard University. Mawi has shared his insights on many prominent media including The Oprah Winfrey Show, ESSENCE, The Chicago Tribune and NPR. Oprah has described his interview as “One of the Twenty Best Moment's of her career”!

The tie in is natural since The Resource Center provides tutoring in all academic subjects, with an emphasis on educating students for whom English is a second language. Founded in 2002, the Center serves nearly 100 families each school year. Nearly two-thirds of the students served are immigrants and refugees representing families from 14 different countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa.

All proceeds to benefit The Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center. Support literacy for the world's children in our own backyard by attending the first ever Literary Tea from 12:30-3:00 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. $45 per seat also includes Mawi's bestselling memoir.
