Scouting Crystal Lake South at Huntley
Crystal Lake South (6-0, 2-0) at Huntley (3-3, 1-1)
When: 7:15 p.m. Friday at Huntley Athletic Field
Last year: Crystal Lake South 41, Huntley 0
Last week: Crystal Lake 28, South at Jacobs 14; Cary-Grove 28, Huntley 6
Outlook: The Gators, ranked No. 6 in Class 7A, hit the road for a Fox Valley Conference Valley Division game for the second straight week. The Gators were served a reminder last week by a feisty Jacobs squad that fundamentals hold the key success. "I think what we learned from the Jacobs game is that our technique was poor and we've been able to get away with that a bit or we haven't noticed it in past games," CL South coach Chuck Ahsmann said. "We hope we've corrected it, but we'll find out (tonight)." The Gators boast one of the largest offensive lines of any Illinois high School football team. "Our practices this week have been about getting the most out of our ability, trying to play as hard as we can and perfecting the things the boys have been taught their technique, their pad level and their fundamentals," Red Raiders coach Matt Gehrig said. "We have to apply all those things into stopping what we feel are their strengths, which are many. Overall, they're not ranked in the top 10 in the state for no reason. We're just hoping to play our best and play four solid quarters against them." Bolek Mikulec leads the Gators with 554 yards and 4 touchdowns on 105 carries (5.3 avg.). Huntley running back Chris Cunningham will remain sidelined with an ankle injury. Since Huntley joined the FVC in 2003, Crystal Lake South has won all 4 meetings between these schools by a combined score of 167-14.
