Scouting Hoffman Estates at Fremd
Hoffman Estates (0-5, 0-1) at Fremd (1-4, 0-1)
When: 7:30 p.m. today at Hale Hildebrandt Field
Last week: Hoffman lost to Palatine 49-7; Fremd lost to Schaumburg 17-14
Outlook: Two streaks are at stake Fremd's Mid-Suburban League record of consecutive playoff trips at 15 and Hoffman's losing streak of 21 games. And Hoffman figures it has nothing to lose even though it has 13 straight times in a series it trails 19-5. "We'll try to play the spoiler and our kids are excited about the challenge," said Hoffman coach Bill Helzer, whose team lost 27-23 in the final seconds at Fremd two years ago. "All of the pressure is on them and we don't have that pressure." Hoffman wasn't hurt by turnovers last week with its only one coming late and Jonathan Moore broke an early 85-yard TD run to provide a big spark. Senior QB David Gutierrez was banged up but came back to play the second half. Fremd overcame bad field position to keep Schaumburg out of the end zone until late in the third quarter last week. Freshman QB Sam Beutler made his first start and threw for 145 yards and a TD and rushed for a touchdown. "We played our butts off the first half but in the second half we just couldn't get it going offensively with any consistency," said Fremd coach Mike Donatucci.
