Maine West homecoming: It's a jungle out there
Maine West High School will celebrate Homecoming Week 2010 from Sept. 25 to Oct. 2 with the theme: "In the Heart of the Jungle."
Community members are invited to join in the celebration on Friday, Oct. 1, when the Homecoming Parade steps off at 4:30 p.m.; and the Warrior varsity football team will host Glenbrook North at 7:30 p.m.
A fireworks display will top off the evening at 11 p.m.
But events will get under way several days earlier, starting with a Tailgate, sponsored by Student Council and Class Councils before the varsity soccer game, which begins at 2 p.m. on Sept. 25.
Also scheduled for that day are a class Tug-of-War and class competition for the Spirit Jug, with the prize going to whichever class has the most students in attendance.
On Monday, Sept. 27, students will compete in the Amazing Warrior Race at 6 p.m.
Tuesday brings the Powder Puff football game at 7 p.m., followed by the annual Maine West bonfire at 8:30 p.m.
Thursday features Outdoor Movie Night, with "Avatar" being shown near the tennis courts at 7 p.m.
On Friday, this year's Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned during a school assembly, before the parade and football game. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. outside Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at Howard and Lee, and ending in the stadium. Fireworks will begin at the conclusion of the Varsity football game.
Other varsity sports events during the week include girls tennis at 4:30 p.m. and girls volleyball at 6 p.m., both on Tuesday, Sept. 28.
Homecoming Week ensures that Maine West's hallways will feature a rainbow of color, fashion and otherwise. Monday is Sports Attire Day; Tuesday is Jungle Animal Day; Wednesday is Wacky Dress Day; and Thursday is Class Color Day.
On Friday students will be sporting the school colors of blue and gold. Adding to the spirit will be cafeteria window decorating by clubs and organizations.
Homecoming Week will wrap up Saturday with the Maine West varsity girls' "Swim for the Cure" event and that evening's "In the Heart of the Jungle" Homecoming Dance.
