Driver charged after Schaumburg man killed in West Chicago wreck

A Carpentersville man is being held in DuPage County jail after he was accused of fleeing the scene of an accident where a 27-year-old Schaumburg man was killed in West Chicago early Sunday.

Austin Weidner was traveling north on Route 59 in his 2001 Ford Escort when Alonso Huerta, 23, of the 100 block of Mora Avenue in Carpentersville, disobeyed a traffic light while heading east in his 2003 Ford Explorer on Lester Avenue and hit Weidner, police said.

The force of the crash at 2:29 a.m. caused the Explorer to flip over, said Cmdr. Chris Shackelford of the West Chicago Police Department.

Weidner was taken from the scene to Central DuPage Hospital, where he later died, Skackelford said.

All six people in the Explorer fled the scene of the crash before the arrival of rescue units, Shackelford said. They were later found at a house on the 0N400 block of Prince Crossing Road in West Chicago.

Alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash, Shackelford said.

Bail was set at $600,000 on charges of disobeying a stop sign and leaving the scene of a traffic accident involving death, but charges could be upgraded pending blood-alcohol test results, police said.

Shackelford said additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.
