DUI crackdown: Starting today St. Charles police will conduct a two-week traffic safety campaign with an emphasis on impaired driving. This is the sixth year the police department has participated in the Illinois Department of Transportation's "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose" campaign. Extra officers will be on patrol through Labor Day for additional DUI enforcement. Officers also will be on the lookout for speeding and seat belt violations.Backpack checkups available:Chiro One Wellness Centers is providing free backpack safety checks and backpack safety tips. Parents can bring in their children, their friends and their filled backpacks for free posture checks (with and without pack) as well spinal exams. Hours are 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. weekdays at all Chicago-area locations, including 110 Hansen Blvd. in North Aurora; 382 S. Randall Road, South Elgin; 546-F S. Randall Road in St. Charles; and 191 W. North Ave. in West Chicago. Reservations are recommended. Call (630) 468-1824.Saints car wash Saturday:The St. Charles East High School cheerleaders will have a car washing fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at AAMCO Total Car Care, 1845 E. Main St.Dogs and jewels:State Street Jewelers will host a pet adoption during its "Dog Days of Summer" campaign. Paws 4 U 4 Ever will bring dogs and puppies to the store from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. It will also collect donations of money and dog food. Part of the store's proceeds that day will be donated to the West Chicago-based shelter. The store is at 214 W. State St. Visit statestreetjewelers.com.Cat adoption day:Homes for Endangered and Lost Pets (H.E.L.P.) is having a cat adoption day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 28 at National City Bank, 2600 E. Main St., St. Charles. If you are planning to adopt, all members of the household must be present. Renters should bring a copy of their lease that shows cats are allowed. It will be a four-person scramble with two divisions, Men's or Mixed (at least one woman). Sponsorships are available until Aug. 31.
