The Des Plaines Optimist Club hosted its final Free Friday Night Movie in the Park Friday, Aug. 6, with a showing of the classic 1939 film, The Wizard of Oz, based on the stories by L. Frank Baum. Hundreds of Ozians turned out to follow Dorothy and her friends on their magical quest.
Children were invited to dress up in character for a judged costume contest before the screening. Ten children participated, ages 2 ½ to 8: five Dorothys with Totos in tow, three lions, one scarecrow, and one Glinda the Good Witch. First prize was awarded to McKayla Garnett, 3, Des Plaines dressed as Dorothy, second prize went to the Scarecrow, Joey Bruno, 2, and third prize to Morgan Meinecke, 2 ½, clad as the Cowardly Lion.
On Aug. 11, The Optimists will sponsor the Annual Free Youth Golf Tournament at the Lake Park Golf Course, for players ages 9-16. The shotgun start is at 10 a. m. Golfers receive a round on the 18-hole, par three course, lunch, and prizes. All golfers should have some course play experience.
