Competitors use duct tape, cardboard to race boats in Fox Lake

Duct tape is allegedly a product that can hold anything together.

For the 13th time in Fox Lake, that premise is being put to the test when people combine cardboard, duct tape and paint in an effort to make a boat that can float across Nippersink Lake.

The village of Fox Lake is hosting the 13th annual Cardboard Boat Race at the village's Lakefront Park, 71 Nippersink Drive.

The event, which is open to anyone willing to try, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 15.

The races begin at noon, but people who are building their boats on site are asked to arrive at 8 a.m. The cost to enter a boat in the event is $25.

There are six categories of races, officials said, depending on whether people build their boat on site or off site.

There are winners for on-site and off-site boaters under 10 years old, between the ages of 10 and 14 and adults.

Medals will be given to all children who assist with boat building and race in the show. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third places, as well as best of show and fastest sinking in each category.

People who build their boats on site must use materials provided to them, meaning shapes and sizes are restricted by the cardboard and duct tape included in each kit. People are, however, allowed to bring their own decorating items.

Off-site builders are not limited in the amount of cardboard and duct tape that can be used; however, they are not allowed to use foam, plastic or wood on the boats. Like the on-site builders, duct tape, cardboard and paint are the only items allowed.

Off-site builders have no restrictions on length of the boat or the number of crew members per boat.

Life preservers are mandatory and people are required to bring their own. Also, people are urged to bring their own oars to the event.

All participants are asked to sign a waiver before going out in the water, officials said.
