Pantry seeks school supplies:The West Suburban Community Pantry is accepting donations of school supplies through Aug. 31 for 1,200 children in need in the Lisle and Woodridge communities. The pantry is accepting red pens, duo-tang folders, highlighters, colored pencils, glue sticks, scissors, eight- or 10-count markers, and school glue. Complete supply lists can be found at wcpinc.org/adopt student.htm. Donations may be dropped off at the pantry, 6809 Hobson Valley Drive #118, Woodridge, or at Argonne Credit Union, Bridgeview Bank, Lisle Savings Bank, as well as at St. Scholastica, Prince of Peace and Woodridge United Methodist churches. For details, call (630) 512-9921.Band seeks new members:Home-schooled students between the ages of nine and 19 are invited to apply this fall for the West Suburban Home Band. The band practices on Thursday evenings at Resurrection Church, Route 59 and Army Trail Road, in Wayne. For the 2010-11 concert season the band will waive the instrument rental fee for students choosing oboe, French horn or tuba as their primary instrument. The family fee and student tuition still apply. For details, contact wshsb.com or (630) 231-6155.Big band jazz program in Wheaton:The Wheaton Municipal Band will present a big band jazz program for its final concert of the season 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug 12 at Memorial Park, 208 West Union Ave., Wheaton. The free concert will feature guest conductor Doug Beach of Elmhurst College and local jazz artists Frank Caruso on piano, Rob Parton on trumpet, Mark Colby on tenor sax, Mike Pinto on guitar, Keith Brooks on drums, and Ken Haebich on bass. Bethany Bredehoft will be the featured vocalist. A mix of mix of jazz standards and big band originals will be performed, including "Out of Nowhere," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "One Note Samba." The band also will pay tribute to the big band sounds of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, and Glen Miller.
