Mundelein to host its wakeboard skills event
The Mundelein Park District's third annual Wakeboard Competition and Demo is set for Diamond Lake this weekend.
Come and see cool, high-flying fun - with wakeboarding's spins, tricks, grabs and more - in this one-of-kind event for all ages and skill levels.
Set to appear at the event are 17-year-old Pierce Homsey, World Championships finalist and currently ranked 9th overall on the Pro Wakeboard Tour, and Quinn Rundall, 10, who placed fourth in the Wakeboard Nationals.
Both share the "home field" advantage since they live and train on Diamond Lake.
Visitors can enjoy a day at the beach with boat displays and special kids' activities. Opportunities for swimming and boating are available at the conclusion of the event.
Those wishing to compete can join in and chase prizes in judged divisions that include Outlaw, Wakeskate, Beginner and Intermediate. The event is sponsored by Munson Ski & Marine of Lakemoor.
Those wishing to compete can register by calling (815) 363-5400. Registrations will also be taken the morning of the event beginning at 7:30 a.m.
A boat-towed sport combining water skiing, snowboarding and surfing techniques, wakeboarding continues to grow in popularity. The park district's event with Munson Ski & Marine brings together some of the best wakeboarders to compete and showcase their talents to Chicago area fans.
"We are very excited to again play host to this unique wakeboard competition and demo," said Margaret Resnick, director of the Mundelein Park and Recreation District. "It's a great way to spend time outdoors, get to know this fun sport and enjoy Mundelein's great beach."
Diamond Lake Beach is open daily through Aug. 6. It offers lake swimming, soft sand, a boat launch, picnic grove, waterfront playgrounds and the new floating SportsPark.
Daily and season passes are available. Children ages 2 and younger are admitted free every day with paid adult admission.
