Four District 211 students named Golden Apple Scholars

Four High School District 211 students were recently named 2010 Golden Apple Scholars: Emmanuel Del Rio and Kimberley Howard from Palatine High School, and Lisa Papeck and Aubrey Templeman from Hoffman Estates High School.

Over 2,100 nominations were received statewide this year, with 105 students being selected as Scholars.

Scholars were honored by the Golden Apple Foundation at a reception on April 25, at DePaul University's Lincoln Park Campus, while District 211 Golden Apple Scholars were recognized by the Board of Education at its May 13, meeting.

They will receive $2,500 scholarships apiece their freshman and sophomore years. The amount increases to $5,000 their junior and senior years.

In exchange, they must earn a bachelor's degree at one of 53 Illinois universities that participate in the program, obtain Illinois teacher certification, and teach for five years in a high-poverty school.
