Logue's homer extends Barrington's season
As the lone senior in Barrington's starting lineup, Nora Logue didn't want to see her high school career come to an end on Saturday.
The center fielder broke open a tie game in the sixth inning when she belted her second home run of the day over the left-field fence to propel the second-seeded Fillies past No. 7 Stevenson 5-3 in the Highland Park regional championship game.
Logue, who knocked in 4 of the 5 Barrington runs on her 2 long balls, hit 4 home runs during the regular season.
"We want to go all the way, and we want it bad," Logue said. "So I was willing to do what was necessary to go all the way."
Barrington (32-5) coach Perry Peterson said Logue's big day was well deserved.
"She's incredibly focused and wants to do well," he said. "When a kid like that does well on a day like this, it's rewarding because all that hard work pays off. That's pretty special."
The Fillies' win sets up a meeting with No. 6 Lake Zurich in the semifinals of the Buffalo Grove sectional at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Barrington has won nine consecutive regional crowns and 14 in school history.
Stevenson (19-17) got things started, tallying 3 runs on Fillies' starter Kiley Dolezal (29-5) in the third inning.
After back-to-back singles from Alyssa Mpistolarides and Megan Felz to lead off the inning, Amanda Jaegers doubled to left field to knock in Mpistolarides and later scored Felz on a throwing error from left field. Rebekah Ozga singled home Jaegers later in the inning to give the Patriots a 3-0 lead.
The Fillies got to Stevenson starter Allison Micucci (14-12) in the bottom of the third.
Colleen Shandley led off the inning with a single before a 2-run homer from Logue and an RBI double off the bat off Loren Krzysko tied the game at 3-3.
Krzysko has an opportunity to score on a sacrifice fly later in the inning, but the freshman tagged up too early and the potential go-ahead run was out at third.
The game remained tied until Logue put Barrington up 5-3 with her home run in the sixth.
"There was definitely a sense of urgency," Logue said. "I felt like I really had to do my part to get (that run) back."
Stevenson was unable get to Dolezal in the seventh, as the junior earned the complete-game victory.
"It's not the outcome we were hoping for," said Stevenson coach Larry Friedrichs. "But we certainly walk away proud of how we played."
