Hemmer home runs not enough for Mundelein
Alex Hemmer hammered the softball, but Mundelein couldn't nail down the victory Thursday.
Hemmer homered twice and doubled twice in the Mustangs' 12-7 home loss to Crystal Lake South in a nonconference game. The sophomore catcher finished 4-for-4 with 7 RBI.
Justina Doll also had 2 doubles for Mundelein (6-16).
Grayslake North 8, Woodstock North 2: Kelsey Borders went 3-for-4 with 2 triples, and 2 RBI for the Knights in the Fox Valley Conference game.
Ashley King also legged out a pair of triples for Grayslake North. She had 2 hits, as did Kristina Gandy and Raquel Ness.
Lake Zurich 7, Carmel 1: Megan Mattera homered for the second straight day, and Paige Goldberg went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases and an RBI for the Bears (17-9).
Mattera and Erin Sweeney (double, stolen base, RBI) each finished 2-for-4, while Alli McGinnis had a single and 2 RBI. Amanda Orchard chipped in a triple.
Mattera's homer was her ninth of the season. She also pitched a complete game, striking out 12, while walking three and yielding 4 hits. She did not allow an earned run.
Vernon Hills 6, McHenry 3: Megan Meline (triple), Paige Kahalnik (double) and Jennifer Claussen each had 2 hits for the visiting Cougars in the nonconference game.
Meline threw all 7 innings, striking out eight, walking one and scattering 5 hits.
Vernon Hills improved to 11-16.
Johnsburg 6, Grayslake Central 3: Claire Brennan suffered the loss, allowing only 3 earned runs. She also had a double.
Prospect 3, Libertyville 1: The Knights scored twice in the top of the 10th to break a 1-1 tie in the nonconference game.
Calley Kaluzny's RBI single in the second, scoring Athena Cocallas (single), accounted for the Wildcats' only run.
Libertyville fell to 8-17.
