Wednesday's Fox Valley roundup
Huntley held on to win a white-knuckler over St. Charles East, 9-8 in eight innings, in nonconference play at the University of Illinois-Chicago Wednesday.
The Saints never led, but they scored in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings, setting the stage for Huntley senior Phil Pupillo.
Pupillo (2-for-4, 3 RBI) doubled in the top of the eighth to score Andre Sopena and Carlos Alvarez for a 9-7 lead. Pupillo then earned his second save of the season by escaping a tense situation.
St. Charles East had already scored once in the eighth to trim the Huntley lead to 9-8, and the Saints had the bases loaded with one out. Pupillo helped himself by picking off a runner at second base, then he induced a groundout from Ryan O'Dell to end the game.
Alvarez went 3-for-5 and scored 3 runs, Chris Klein drove in 4 runs and Justin Gundlach (4-0) got the win in relief for Huntley (17-4).
Streamwood 14, Neuqua Valley 13: The Sabres held off a late bid by the Wildcats to hang on for an Upstate Eight Conference win in Naperville. Streamwood fell behind 9-3 after three innings but rallied with a 5-run fourth, took the lead with 3 runs in the sixth and added 3 important insurance runs in the seventh. Neuqua Valley scored 4 runs in its half of the seventh and outhit the Sabres 15-9 to no avail.
Josh Harris homered, Dylan Noncek doubled and junior Richie Gorski got the win for Streamwood (13-6, 7-3).
Hampshire 8, Richmond-Burton 7: Senior Ryan Burke improved to 5-3 on the mound and homered at the plate to lead the Whip-Purs to a road win in the Big Northern East. Senior Ryan DeChant doubled twice for Hampshire (9-7, 4-0).
