Friday's Fox Valley roundup

The Bartlett softball team had its chances Friday but came up just short.

Playing defending Ohio state champion Elyria in the opening round of the Wendy's Spring Classic in Ashland, Ohio, the Hawks left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning and lost 2-1.

"It was a great game with a sectional-like atmosphere," said Bartlett coach Jim Wolfsmith. "We had the bases loaded twice and just couldn't get the big knock."

Elyria carried a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth when Bartlett thought it had a home run from senior Callie Dennison. But Elyria's center fielder caught Dennison's long drive while crashing through the portable fence.

Dennison, who went 2-for-4 with a double, was the tough-luck loser in the circle. She struck out four, didn't walk anyone and allowed just 1 earned run on 3 hits.

"Callie pitched a great game," Wolfsmith said.

The game matched Butler University recruits in the circle in Dennison and Elyria's Kristin Boras, who allowed Bartlett 8 hits but worked out of several jams.

Megan Morales went 3-for-3 at the plate for the Hawks, who play three more games today in Ashland.

Huntley 17, Dundee-Crown 2: The Red Raiders (9-4, 3-1) exploded offensively as they tallied 15 hits and 17 runs to cruise to an easy victory over the Chargers in this Fox Valley (Valley) matchup. Amanda Wisniewski (3-for-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) and Arianna Albanese (2-for-3, 3 runs, 2 RBI) paced the Red Raiders offensively. Taylor Larson (7-3) earned the victory in the circle for Huntley as she tossed 5 complete innings, gave up 2 earned runs and 5 hits while striking out 8.

Burlington Central 21, Rockford Lutheran 0: Jet Kein (5-5) threw 5 innings of no-hit ball as the Rockets easily handled Rockford Lutheran in this nonconference game. Haley Albomonte went 3-for-4 at the plate while Kein and Sarah Kisch went 2-for-2 to lead the Rockets.
