Benet's Lewin finds comfort zone
Caytin Lewin could not have been comfortable Thursday afternoon.
Playing in 36-degree weather, fighting a stiff wind coming from behind one of the goals and dealing with some nasty blisters on her feet, Lewin could have been forgiven for taking the day off. Instead the Benet co-captain scored the game's only goal in a 1-0 victory at Glenbard West.
"I have them taped up, but it's pretty bad," Lewin said of the blisters developed in preseason workouts. "They're getting better, but we'll see. The spring break will be a good rest, I guess."
After the Redwings (1-1) earned a corner kick, Lewin shook free of a defender to win a header, sending it into the corner of the Hilltoppers' net.
"It was perfect and I just found the right spot," Lewin said of Madie Burke's corner kick. "We ran through the defenders and they ran into each other and we just got our way through."
The goal was one of the few good scoring chances either team got in a game played mostly at midfield.
"I thought we didn't play very well, we didn't handle the situation very well, we didn't pass well," Benet coach Henry Wind said. "We needed to get the ball under control a little bit quicker. We generated no offense. We have a lot of work ahead of us."
Meanwhile, the Benet defense held off the Hilltoppers (1-1). The closest Glenbard West could come to scoring was a 73rd-minute goal by Quinn Refer that was quickly waved off due to offsides.
"The back line is pretty good, my goalie (Claire Munaretto) is pretty good," Wind said.
