Ingleside man charged with murder in Riverwoods teen's stabbing death

An Ingleside man who stabbed a 19-year-old Riverwoods man during an argument over drugs has been formally charged with murder, Lake County State's Attorney officials said.

James Lewis, 42, of the 26000 block of Route 134, was indicted Wednesday on two counts of first-degree murder in the stabbing death of John Herres.

If convicted, Lewis faces 20 to 60 years in prison. He is held in Lake County jail on $3 million bond.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Steve Scheller said Lewis had purchased a quarter-ounce of marijuana for a group of teens during a get-together at his home Feb. 14. Herres was one of the teens present, Scheller said.

Lewis and someone in Herres' group argued over the amount of marijuana brought back to the home after the drug purchase, Scheller said. Lewis' unidentified girlfriend accused him of keeping some of the drug for himself, Scheller said, touching off an argument between them.

Lewis pushed the woman, and Herres stepped in to try and diffuse the argument, Scheller said. Lewis became enraged, pulled out a 5-inch knife, and stabbed Herres in the abdomen, Scheller said.

Herres died that evening at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Scheller said.
