Dist. 158 at fault for special ed problem

Taxpayers in School District 158 should be disgusted with the administration and the school board regarding the recent resignation of the special education director. It is the obligation of those in charge of hiring personnel to make checking qualifications and certification an integral part of their job.

It is very clear that the Illinois State Board of Education requires a special education director endorsement. There is no excuse for this oversight. To compound the problem, titles have been changed to allow personnel to continue to serve in positions for which they do not have the endorsement required. Parents of special education children deserve better and so do the taxpayers of District 158. Every effort should be made to ensure compliance with the law.
