St. Viator doesn't stumble at Marian

A long layoff and a long trip didn't bother St. Viator's boys basketball team Friday night.

The Lions (17-6, 6-5) went to Chicago Heights for their first game in nine days and pulled out a 46-40 East Suburban Catholic Conference victory over Marian Catholic (6-20, 2-9).

"Every time we would get a lead they would come back," said Viator coach Joe Majkowski. "We just couldn't get away from them."

But the Lions didn't let it slip away, either, after having an 11-1 lead wiped out in the second quarter. They regained a 24-17 lead at halftime.

Alan Aboona led the way with 14 points, Richard McLoughlin had 13 points and 7 rebounds, Brendan King scored 10 points and Chris Myjak had 9 rebounds for the Lions. Marian was 8-for-23 on 3-pointers but just 11-for-37 (29.7 percent) overall from the field.

"I thought our defense played very well," Majkowski said.

Highland Park 48, Maine West 31: No player from Highland Park (12-10, 5-4) scored in double figures but it pulled away to the Central Suburban North home win with three double-digit quarters.

Alex Samuelson scored a game-high 12 points for Maine West (7-17, 1-8) in its fourth straight loss. Marin Kukoc, Tyler Max and Chris Kozloff scored 8 points apiece for the Giants.

Downers South 66, Leyden 39: Leyden (11-12, 5-5) fell in the West Suburban Gold game at Downers Grove South.
