Hoffman tops Schaumburg; Kipp on verge of No. 700
Nursing an 18-16 lead in the second quarter, Hoffman Estates was able to put together an 8-0 run and grab some breathing room en route to a 51-30 victory over visiting Schaumburg.
Hawks freshman forward Destinee Young scored all 6 of her points during the rally.
The Hawks (18-4), who have reeled off 14 wins in their last 15 games, remained in a first-place tie in the Mid-Suburban West with Fremd and Barrington. All three teams are 6-1.
Seniors Kelsey Lukowicz (14 points, two 3-pointers, 4 assists) and Megan Bernardoni (13 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) led the defending MSL West co-champs while junior Precious Ogunleye pulled down 6 rebounds and classmate Jada Stotts chipped in 9 points.
Schaumburg (4-18, 1-6) was led by sophomore Alyssa Saklak's 11 points and 6 from senior Taylor Kosla (two 3-pointers).
Maine West 50, Maine South 47: Maine West coach Derril Kipp drew to within win of joining only three other coaches in IHSA girls basketball history with 700 or more career wins.
Kipp's Warriors got a rebound basket by senior Megan O'Neill (game-high 20 points, 10 rebounds) with 28 seconds left to seal the victory and give the veteran coach his 699th career win.
Only Marshall's Dorothy Gaters, Fenwick's Dave Power and Galesburg's Evan Massey have won 700 games. Gaters has more than 900 wins.
Junior forward Kayla Kennelly (3 assists) scored all 9 of her points in the first half.
The 5-foot-10 junior was playing only her second game since returning from a broken foot. She played about half of the game.
"Kayla really gave us a spark," Kipp said. "And we had a real good second quarter (outscored Hawks 17-11)."
Hoye and Coogan each had free throws in the final 40 seconds after Maine South had rallied from a 46-39 deficit.
West senior Ellen Coogan tossed in 7 points with 8 rebounds. Classmates Alli Ellwood and Amanda Ollerer chipped in 6 points apiece.
The Warriors will try to give Kipp his milestone win on Friday night in Des Plaines when Glenbrook North visits for a Central Suburban North contest.
The Warriors (9-15, 5-2) won in Northbrook 53-37 earlier this season.
Rolling Meadows 44, Willowbrook 30: Among the top scorers for Meadows were Amanda Gunn and Ashley Rios, who each had 8 points in the Season's End victory.
Madelyn Conlin chipped in 7 and Sara Shumaker 6 for the Mustangs (10-11).
