Hersey, Elk Grove pick up big wins

Put another game in the win column for Hersey's girls basketball team.

The front line of Maddie Swan, Kathryn Korff and Eileen Zydek combined for 30 rebounds as the state-ranked Huskies posted an impressive 61-37 victory over a highly-regarded Glenbrook South squad at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Leading 28-26 at half, Hersey outscored the girls from Glenview 33-11 in the second half.

Both teams are now 14-4.

Swan pulled down 12 rebounds followed by Korff (10) and Zydek (8).

Megan Rogowski (four 3-pointers) led all scorers with 20 points. Swan added 12.

"Our posts were great and Megan Rogowski had her usual game with clutch shots," said Hersey coach Mary Fendley. "And our bench was incredible."

With senior guard Andrea Perkins in some foul trouble, junior Brittany Pittas came off the bench to get her first quality minutes of the season and produced a career-high 10 points.

Swan also sat several minutes in the third quarter because of foul problems.

"Maggie Hogen came in and had some key rebounds for us, too," Fendley said.

Senior point Julia Fredian, who has missed Hersey's last two games, remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

"We finally kind of figured out how to play without Julia," Fendley said. "We hadn't played real well in a week but this game we looked great."

Fendley praised the defensive effort of Perkins and Kari Tunney on Titans standout Jannelle Flaws, who scored 14 points along with teammate Kelly Minx.

"Glenbrook South is really a good team," Fendley added. ""We've really been able to step it up in big games. And now we have some big ones coming up."

Elk Grove 54, Addison Trail 24: Elk Grove improved to 15-3 as 6-foot-4 Courtney Lindfors scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down 8 rebounds.

It was Lindfors' sixth game of scoring 20 or more points this season.

Her high-powered front line partner Ashley Capotosto did not play because of illness.

Coach Ryan Kirkorsky hopes to have the 6-foot Capotosto back for Friday's MSL East game against visiting Rolling Meadows.

Sophomore Dani Goranson fired home 11 points with a 3-pointer and senior point guard Olivia Roback added 8 for the Grens, who also received 3 pointers from Maggie Fries and Missy Regan.

Proviso West 50, Conant 35: Senior Kim Davis scored 8 points to lead Conant (5-13) in the nonconference game in Hoffman Estates. Kelly Lomas and Natalie Kutramanes each added 6 points for the hosts.
