Woodfield Crate and Barrel set to close

Upscale housewares retailer Crate & Barrel is moving out of Woodfield Shopping Center later this month in preparation to move into a larger store in Schaumburg.

The Northbrook company is building a new 26,200-square-foot store at 760 N. Martingale Road at the southwest corner of Woodfield and Martingale roads, just west of the Streets of Woodfield, said Bette Kahn of Crate & Barrel.

The Woodfield store is expected to close on Sunday, Jan. 24 while the new location will open Thursday, Feb. 11.

Furniture will be added at the new location, which is about double the size of the indoor mall shop, Kahn said. "Everyone has wanted furniture here for so long," she added. The company started selling furniture 1989.

The new store will be located next to Whole Foods, expected to open in the spring.

Crate & Barrel will devote the first floor of the new location to retail space while the second floor will house offices.

Meanwhile, the company also plans to close its CB2 store on Lincoln Avenue later this month, leaving the chain with one CB2 location in Chicago.

The store at 3757 N. Lincoln Ave. opened in January 2000, the first CB2 store for Crate & Barrel. It's slated to close Jan. 17. The location at 800 W. North Ave. will stay open.

The Lincoln Avenue store served as a test for the home store to experiment with more affordable, contemporary merchandise aimed at younger shoppers. The company said that when the lease ends, its goal is to focus on new markets.
