Candidates to meet:The Republican candidates running for the 8th House District seat will meet in a debate today in Round Lake. The event is set to begin at 7 p.m. at the Round Lake Area Park District building, 860 Hart Road. Six Republicans are running for the seat: Dirk Beveridge, John Dawson, Chris Geissler, Greg Jacobs, Maria Rodriguez and Joe Walsh. The incumbent, Democrat Melissa Bean, is running for re-election, while Jonathan Farnick is a Democratic primary write-in candidate. Green Party candidate Bill Scheurer will be on the ballot, too. The district includes parts of Cook, Lake and McHenry counties. The primary election is Feb. 2.New gym floor at Antioch will take six weeks:Officials from Antioch-Lake Villa Area High School District 117 say it will take about six weeks to install a new floor in the main gym after water from a broken pipe damaged the floor on Christmas Eve. Superintendent Jay Sabatino said the district's insurance company will cover the nearly $150,000 cost. Work should start this week. Basketball games and wrestling meets will be moved to other venues in the meantime, Sabatino said.Historical society meets:The history of the Lake County Fair is the topic of the next meeting of the Libertyville-Mundelein Historical Society. Dave DeYoung, president of the Lake County Fair Association, will be the featured speaker at the meeting beginning at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 11, at the Libertyville Township office, 359 Merrill Court. DeYoung will discuss the lengthy history of the popular fair. He also will present an overview of the new fairgrounds that opened last year on Peterson Road in Grayslake and discuss future plans. Call (847) 456-2572.Political debate in Grayslake:League of Women Voters of Lake County, the Daily Herald and Grayslake High School District 127 will host a debate featuring congressional and state candidates seeking office in the February primary. The event will be at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10, at Grayslake Central High School's auditorium, 400 N. Lake St. Expected are all six candidates in the 8th Congressional District's Republican primary: Dirk Beveridge, John Dawson, Christopher Geissler, Maria Rodriguez, Gregory Jacobs and Joe Walsh. Democrat primary write-in candidate Jonathan Farnick is expected, but officials said it's not known if incumbent Melissa Bean will be present. The 8th Congressional District covers all or parts of Lake, McHenry and Cook counties. Also expected at the event are State Rep. Sandy Cole and challenger Paul Mitchell, the Republican primary candidates for the 62nd District state representative seat serving the Grayslake area. Democrat Rich Voltair was not invited because he does not have primary competition in the 62nd District.
