Forum on ComEd trimming: Residents can make their views known on ComEd's tree-trimming practices along DuPage County's trail system during a forum at 7:15 p.m. Jan. 12 in the county administration building at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. The forum, hosted by county board Chairman Bob Schillerstrom, will include presentations by the Illinois Commerce Commission, ComEd and the DuPage state's attorney's office. For details, visit www.dupageco.org.Grant funding meetings: DuPage County will hold two informational meetings for nonprofit organizations interested in applying for Human Services grants. The meetings will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 12 and 10:30 a.m. Jan. 13 in room 1-500B of the county administration building at 421 N. County Farm Road, Wheaton. This year, the fund will distribute $1 million to grant recipients that provide human service needs to county residents. The average grant size in previous years was about $20,000. For details, visit dupageco.org/cdc or call (630) 407-6603.Volunteers needed:The People's Resource Center is seeking volunteers to teach weekly Kids Art classes at two sites in West Chicago and one in Wheaton. The Kids Art program promotes creative expression, critical thinking and interpersonal functioning for at-risk children ages 6 to 15. Dates and times are flexible, but classes must take place weekdays between 3 and 6 p.m. Volunteers must commit to an hour of teaching per week. A binder of project ideas and resources will be provided, along with all supplies. Contact Lesley Gena at (630) 682-5402 ext. 241.Crackdown nets 67 citations:Illinois State Police say they issued 67 citations during special patrols conducted Jan. 1 and 2 along I-88 and I-294 in Cook, DuPage and Kane counties. The crackdown primarily was aimed at drunken drivers, but resulted in 45 speeding tickets, one DUI arrest, two other alcohol-related arrests and numerous other citations. Police said they also issued 25 warnings. The enforcement effort was funded through a grant from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.Mr. Sapru goes to D.C.:A Naperville teen is one of two high school students from across the state who have been selected as delegates to the 48th annual U.S. Senate Youth Program to be held March 6-13 in Washington, D.C. Sidanth Sapru of Naperville - along with Hayley Jones of Yorkville - were chosen from among hundreds of applicants to be part of a group of 104 student delegates to attend the conference. The students will get a direct look at the workings of the federal government. Sapru is student council president at the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora. He also serves as president of the speech team and was a state finalist in the "Original Oratory" event.Drop-off site supports troops: Area residents wanting to support troops overseas can now drop off letters and donations at Countryside Care Centre, 2230 W. Galena Blvd., Aurora. The short-term rehabilitation and long-term skilled nursing facility is collecting items for Operation Support Our Troops-Illinois.
