Cary public works official indicted for child porn

Cary assistant public works Director Jeffrey S. Schroeder has been placed on paid administrative leave in the wake of his indictment earlier in December on charges he possessed child pornography.

Schroeder, 53, of Trevor, Wis., faces two counts of child pornography alleging he possessed computer discs and other materials that show children engaged in sexual behavior.

The federal charges were filed Dec. 8 in U.S. District Court in Wisconsin.

Cary officials got word of the matter on Christmas Eve and dealt with it swiftly, said Mayor Tom Kierna.

"We were informed of the indictment over the weekend and we addressed the matter with Mr. Schroeder on Monday," Kierna said.

Schroeder has been a village employee for a bit more than two years. The village will decide his job status once the case concludes, Kierna said.

"I presume he's innocent until proven guilty," he added said.

If found guilty, Schroeder faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
