Pairings released for 27th Charger Classic

Five-time defending champion Fenwick will begin its quest for a sixth straight Charger Classic girls basketball championship on Saturday, Dec. 26 at 1 p.m. when the Friars take on host Dundee-Crown in the third first-round game of the 27th annual tournament.

The tournament, sponsored for many years by the Daily Herald, will conclude on Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Fenwick, off to an 8-0 start this season under legendary coach Dave Power, won last year's title 61-53 over New Trier. Back from that team is all-stater Trish Liston, who has committed to Duke. Liston scored 22 points and had 7 rebounds in the title game last year.

The Charger Classic will kick off at 10 a.m. on Dec. 26 with Prospect (7-0) playing Hononegah. The 11:30 a.m. game will pit Mother McAuley (5-3) against St. Charles North (3-3) in a matchup of last year's third-place game teams, a game won by McAuley 49-44.

After the D-C vs. Fenwick game, Evanston will take on Fremd (4-3) at 2:30 p.m., Naperville Central (9-0) plays Regina Dominican at 4 p.m., Maine West (3-5) meets Johnsburg (5-3) at 5:30 p.m., Bartlett (5-4) takes on Buffalo Grove at 7 p.m., and the first round concludes at 8:30 p.m. with New Trier (6-1) meeting Resurrection.

Fenwick, New Trier, Naperville Central and Mother McAuley are the top four seeds.
