Look for real answers to U-46 expulsions

As a retired educator with Elgin Area Unit District 46 I find it interesting to read that a predominantly white teaching corps may be culturally mismatched with minority students. It was stated that this might be a major reason for the expulsion rate being mostly black students, as possibly a white teacher may misinterpret student actions that aren't meant to be disruptive or threatening.

When you're caught carrying drugs, setting fire in school toilets, spewing four-letter expletives and exhibiting sexual behavior in school hallways, these are not actions that are being misinterpreted.

Will providing a teaching staff matched to the ethnic, cultural or racial balance of the student body really cure these behaviors?

I applaud U-46 in going public with these issues. Hopefully they can work to teach respect and appropriate behavior to the student body, not just focus on the teaching staff.
