Mundelein Mustangs
Head coach Brian Evans (11th season)
2008-09 season 26-5, 9-3 NSC Lake
They're gone Forward J.J. Sawchuk (12 ppg last season) was a four-year varsity starter, and both she and guard Kelsey O'Connor earned all-area honors last season. They were effective on both ends of the court.
Starting five Senior guard Toni Knar has signed with Missouri Science and Technology, but she'll miss the season with a torn ACL. She was the Mustangs' best player last season, averaging a team-best 13.3 ppg. Senior Brooke Evans has signed with Division II Oakland City University in Indiana. Like Knar, Evans has been logging big minutes since her freshman year and is the daughter of a coach. She's been slowed by bad knees during her high school career but when on the floor has shown she can be one of the conference's best players. Junior post Olivia Dunigan enters her third season on varsity. She's a natural rebounder and is much-improved offensively. Tough senior post Jessi Bjerning has been on varsity the last three seasons and will play a much more prominent role this season. Senior guard Megan Woit played a lot coming off the bench last season and has big upside. Senior Sarah Small can spot up and shoot.
Off the bench Seniors Alison Richards (5-10), Alina Teslenko and Molly Rohan are seniors who got some minutes last season and could play more this winter. Sophomore guards Amanda and Taylor Davis are identical twins and new to the varsity. They'll play a lot. "I don't know if they'll start, but you don't move kids up to sit them," Brian Evans said. "They're ballhandlers." Sophomore Rachael Millner is also up for the first time and, at 5-11, has the potential to develop into a solid post player. The junior newcomers include Megan Harris, Kate Wallen and Maegan Schultz.
Evans says "(They key) will be how quickly we can adjust to not having Toni on the floor. When they realize that she's not out there to bail us out, and when they adjust to that, we'll be all right."
