Benet Redwings
Coach Gene Heidkamp.
Last year 12-15, 6-7, tied for fifth in the East Suburban Catholic Conference; lost 59-57 in overtime to Neuqua Valley in the Class 4A Batavia regional semifinals.
Top players Dave Sobolewski, jr., G; Mike Runger, sr., F; Dylan Flood, sr., F; Frank Kaminsky, jr., C; Matt Parisi, jr., G; James Roemer, jr., F; Pat Boyle, jr., F; Blake Lantero, sr., G.
Scouting report It's already a good start for the Redwings because, unlike last year, Sobolewski is healthy coming into the season. The All-Area guard, one of the state's premier juniors, averaged nearly 17 points and 4 assists last year. Three other juniors - 6-foot-9 Kaminsky, 6-6 Roemer and Parisi - formed the core of a sophomore team that went 23-2 and won the ESCC title without Sobolewski. Add in the senior leadership of Runger and Flood, and it's a strong foundation as the Redwings challenge for a spot in the upper echelon of the ESCC along with St. Patrick and St. Joseph, playing its final season in the conference. "With the seniors and juniors we've got, I like the mix of this group," Heidkamp said. "I think we can be pretty successful."
