No new charges for ex-fugitive Maday

Robert Maday made an uneventful appearance in U.S. District Court today.

Escorted by a pair of armed U.S. marshals dressed in khakis and polo shirts, and with no additional security, Maday, who escaped from custody last month and led police on a 26-hour manhunt, appeared Monday in an orange jumpsuit for a status hearing on his sentencing for bank robberies he admitted committing in the Northwest suburbs last year.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Burke said he would be amending the sentencing guidelines to account for Maday's escape from Cook County authorities in September. Maday's attorney, Anthony Sassan, said he did not expect to file to withdraw Maday's guilty plea, no matter how the guidelines were amended. Judge Robert Gettleman set a schedule for the filings targeting a Jan. 19 date for sentencing.

Maday's matter-of-fact appearance at the Dirksen Building in Chicago was in marked contrast to the high security last week at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, where he was surrounded by federal and local authorities as he was sentenced to 13 years in prison on local robbery charges.

Federal authorities have not yet filed any additional charges for Maday's alleged two-day crime spree during his escape in September, when he was blamed by police for two carjackings and a Bloomingdale bank robbery, in addition to the escape.
