Get a haircut for charity:
Students and staff of Empire Beauty Schools in Hanover Park, Lisle and Arlington Heights are giving $5 haircuts for charity, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. The schools will donate 100 percent of all local National Day of Beauty proceeds raised from hair, skin and nail services to Family Shelter Services in Hanover Park and the WINGS Shelter in Palatine. Salons are located at 1167 W. Lake St., Hanover Park; 2709 Maple Ave., Lisle and 264 W. Rand Road, Arlington Heights. Information is at empiregivesback.com.
Emergency response training:
The Villa Park Police Department is holding a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class to train interested residents in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. The class meets from 7 to 10 p.m. Thursdays from Oct. 29 through Dec. 2. The program is free and open to all Villa Park residents age 21 and older, but class size is limited. Interested persons are asked to register before the first class by calling Officer William Lyons at (630) 834-7447. For more information on the CERT program, go to citizencorps.gov/cert/.
Leaf pickup in Lombard:
The village of Lombard's free leaf pickup begins Monday, Oct. 26, and continues through December 4. The free leaf pickup is for Kraft brown paper bags only (unlimited number of bags) and the bags must contain only leaves. Bags of leaves may be put at the curb on the regular garbage collection day. Bags filled with other yard waste, such as grass clippings or small twigs, still require yard-waste stickers. Leaves may not be blown or raked into the street, because the piles can block storm drains, leading to flooding.
Raking volunteers:
West Chicago Youth (formerly WeGo Youth) is looking for youth and adult volunteers to rake the yards of elderly residents on Saturday, Nov. 14. Volunteers will meet at the Helen Fox Community Center on Main Street at 8:30 a.m. and should bring rakes or gas leaf blowers. Pizza will be served after the raking is done. If you have a team that would like to participate, please send an email to shuges21@yahoo.com or call Mike Uplegger at (630) 293-2222 by Oct. 30.
