Lake Zurich haunted house returns

Lake Zurich's annual Haunted House is back this weekend, just in time to get you into the Halloween spirit. The village's Bonnie Matheson tells us what you need to know.

Q. What makes this such a fabulous event?

A. This is an event for both adults and children that is anticipated annually. From the comments we receive after our patrons make it to the exit, many have been coming back for years and thoroughly enjoy their annual scare!

Q. How long has this event been in existence? How has it changed, and what is new this year?

A. The event is in its 18th year. When the Haunted House was originally offered, it was limited to one floor and one weekend in October. We've since included the 2nd floor in our maze and we're now open for two weekends. We offer two children's matinees from noon to 2 p.m. on the Saturdays we're open. Every year the maze is laid out differently and the theme rooms always change so patrons never know what to expect.

Q. What's the highlight of the event?

A. The highlight for us are the screams of the patrons as they tour the blackened hallways.

Q. What kind of activities will appeal to kids and families?

A. Children have the opportunity to trick or treat through the two-story lighted maze with no scary monsters jumping out at them.

Q. What about adults? What does the event offer them?

A. Adults who enjoy being scared will not be disappointed. You never know if someone might be in front, in back or above you! However, cast members are not allowed to touch anyone coming through.

Q. What kinds of food and beverages will be for sale?

A. We have found from history to limit our offerings, so we keep it to popcorn, pop, chips and candy.

Q. Tell us about the volunteers and organizers who pull this together.

A. Many volunteer cast members, as well as makeup artists and construction help, have been donating their time year after year. Employees of the parks and recreation department and public works general services division are responsible for building the two-story maze. Ideas for creating the individual themed rooms are a combined effort and everyone's input is appreciated. Once the rooms start to take shape, continuous tweaking is involved to ensure the success of the event.
