Marathoner Beardsley appearing locally
Famed marathoner Dick Beardsley will be in the suburbs next week to sign his books, give a talk and lead a community run.
Beardsley is perhaps best known for his "Duel in the Sun" against Alberto Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon, considered one of the most memorable marathon finishes ever. Beardsley lost by two seconds in the closest finish at that race, but both runners broke course and American records.
From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19, Beardsley will greet fans and sign copies of his book, "Staying the Course: A Runner's Toughest Race," at Dick Pond Athletics at 2775 Maple Ave. in Lisle.
At 8 p.m. Monday, he'll speak about his life experiences - specifically the many struggles he overcame after his famed Boston finish, including overcoming an addiction to painkillers - at the Krasa Center at Benedictine University, 5700 College Road in Lisle.
Tuesday, Oct. 20, Beardsley will lead a 30-minute "fun run" at 10:15 a.m. starting at the Schaumburg Dick Pond store at 927 S. Roselle Road. After the run, he'll greet fans at the store until about 11:30 a.m.
Then from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Beardsley will be at the Dick Pond store in Carol Stream at 26W515 St. Charles Road.
All events are free and open to the public.
