Benet wins abbreviated Mustang Invite

Rain stopped play of the Rolling Meadows Mustang Invite on Saturday with players in the midst of third round matches and others preparing for the final round of matches.

Benet Academy was declared the tournament's winner and Glenbard West was awarded second place. No other team places were handed out.

The doubles' draw of the invite saw a champion crowned, while the singles' bracket did not finish play.

Benet's Kelly Carney and Joyce Hanlon defeated teammates Madeline Carney and Kim Simmons in the doubles final.

In singles play, Benet's Cassie Kovach had reached the finals and was awaiting the winner of Schaumburg's Monica Lin and Glenbard West's Meredith Maltby, who were in the middle of their match when the rains came.

Maltby had won the first set 7-5 and the second set was just getting started when play was stopped.

Fremd's Shannon Segin was awaiting the winner of Benet's Mary Beth King and Lake Zurich's Monica Gasiorek to play for fifth place before the stoppage.
