CL South runs past Dundee-Crown

Crystal Lake South free safety Alex Macauley didn't appear to show any rust in his first game back from an appendectomy in late-August.

In the Gators' 55-7 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division route over Dundee-Crown, Macauley, who dropped 20 pounds from his illness, made his 2009 debut with some nerves, but it was better late than never. A 28-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, an interception, an 11-yard reception, brought him some relaxation and most importantly, a Gator win.

"It felt great getting in there right away, getting into the swing of things," said Macauley. "I was anxious to get in there."

"Alex has worked hard to get back to playing shape and focus for us," Gators coach Jim Stuglis said. "We were happy and excited to get him back in."

And with the added depth, the Gator pass defense brought on a scarier demeanor, as Alec Giles and Brandon Erickson were also busy intercepting. Erickson snatched 2, while Giles snagged one, and the rest of the Gator defense held the Chargers (1-4, 0-1) to 124 total yards, 23 in the first half, while picking up 2 fumbles, totaling 6 turnovers from a Charger team that amassed just 7 first downs.

"I don't see a weak spot on their team anywhere," Chargers coach Mike Davis said. "We can play them 100 times and I don't think we could beat them once."

And Davis might be right. The Gators d-line held Davis' run game to 42 yards on 17 rushes. On the flip side, South compiled 337 yards rushing with 14 different runners. Running back Kameron Scott led the brigade with 107 yards rushing, 2 touchdowns on 7 rushes.

The Gators (5-0, 1-0) scored their first 5 touchdowns on running plays alone. Running back Bolek Mikulec's 3-yards run, Kameron Scott's 2 runs, from 44 and 2-yards out, fullback J.D Barchard's 3-yard score and Macauley's 28-yard score, put D-C down 35-0 with 6:41 left in the first half. Drew Ormesth (5 for 9, 57 yards) hooked up with John Walsh on a 37-yard touchdown pass, and before Dundee-Crown put 7 on the board, Erickson returned an interception 34 yards to the house, making it 48-0 in the third quarter. Ty Biggos added another special teams score on a 87-yard kickoff return for CLS late in the quarter.

"Sometimes you get beat, and they're just better than we are," Davis said.

Chargers fullback Mateusz Drozdz scored the lone Charger touchdown, a 11-yard run, midway through the third quarter.
