Maday remains jailed awaiting court dates from feds
There doesn't appear to be any rush to get Robert Maday back into a courtroom.
The 39-year-old bank robber, who authorities said escaped Thursday morning in Rolling Meadows from his two Cook County state's attorney's office chaperones, remains jailed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago based on his past convictions.
Rolling Meadows Deputy Police Chief Dave Scanlon said his department has yet to hear from U.S. Marshals on when Maday would appear in court.
"That should be worked out in the next week or so," Scanlon said Sunday morning.
Belkis Cantor, spokeswoman for the U.S. Marshal's office for the Northern District of Illinois, said via e-mail that no court appearances have been scheduled and that charges would eventually come from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
The Elk Grove Village man, who started his criminal career before his 17th birthday, could also face local charges from police in Rolling Meadows, as well as the sites where he allegedly carjacked women in Arlington Heights and Hoffman Estates.
West Chicago Deputy Police Chief Bruce Malkin said his department will likely not ask to file charges against Maday.
"We kind of thought with all that's going on that the federal charges would be much more severe than any local ones," he said.
Two Cook County state's attorney's investigators on Thursday were driving Maday from Kankakee to the Rolling Meadows courthouse where he was expected to receive a 13-year prison sentence for three suburban bank heists that took place last year. The car never made it to its destination, as authorities said Maday overpowered the investigators, taking their two guns and money, and one of the men's clothing. Maday then locked the men in the car and ran.
Twenty-six hours later, Maday was arrested around noon Friday in West Chicago on Route 59 and James Street after crashing a car he allegedly carjacked from a dental receptionist early Friday in Hoffman Estates.
The West Chicago officer who made the arrest and ended the spree has spent two years with the department. He's also a former Marine.
"He's a very fine officer," Malkin said, declining to provide further details about the officer. He said the department wished to protect the officer's privacy.
The case is now in the hands of federal authorities. Despite crossing county lines and entering different jurisdictions, Malkin said things worked smoothly.
"It worked really well, we redeveloped relationships with a lot of agencies," he said.
Investigators continue to try to tie up loose ends, including where Maday spent the night on Thursday. Witnesses at a Hanover Park bar said Maday surfaced there while having a cocktail on the patio of Prairie Station Pub and Grill, 1951 Ontarioville Road. Hanover Park police on Sunday would not say if they received phone calls regarding the apparent Maday spotting.
Maday's exploits also led to the creation of two Facebook fan pages with more than 130 followers. Elsewhere on Twitter and other Web sites, Maday drew comparisons to infamous bank robber John Dillinger. That praise didn't sit too well with Malkin.
"It's really obvious that they don't get it, they don't understand," he said. "Maybe these people have never been victims of a crime, they really don't understand the magnitude of the problem (Maday) created on his spree."
