Meyer drives Elk Grove past Conant
Elk Grove stormed back from a 12-point deficit to stun Conant 22-19 at Charles Feutz Field in Hoffman Estates in Thursday night's Mid-Suburban League football crossover.
Quarterback Nick Meyer engineered 'The Drive,' which went 80 yards in 16 plays. Meyer (15-for-27, 194 yards) tossed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wary with 1:46 left to put Elk Grove (3-1) up 20-19. Meyer then ran in a 2-point conversion to drop Conant to 1-3 despite 280 yards rushing by Kyle Klosowicz.
Meyer completed 4-of-6 passes for 24 yards and ran 7 times for 33 yards on the drive, which took 7:38 to complete.
"The linemen picked it up and started pushing (Conant) off the ball," Meyer said. "Their defense stopped our roll-outs early. Slowly, though, we made some changes to the blocking schemes and it worked."
Wary, who rushed 9 times for 31 yards and caught 3 passes for 20 yards, came up with two big plays on the drive.
He picked up 16 yards on a fourth-and-6 from the Conant 29 and then caught the game winning catch on fourth-and-4.
The Cougars' last shot ended at the Elk Grove 30 when defensive back Jimmy Sanders intercepted a pass with 1:15 left.
"I hope this win carries over," said Grenadiers coach Brian Doll. "We hope this propels us to the next level. I know the kids really wanted this one.
"We like having the ball in Nick's hands. We know he offers us something every time he touches the ball."
Meyer (32 carries, 110 yards) scored Elk Grove's first touchdown on a 4-yard run to tie it at 7-7. Klosowicz scored his second touchdown on a 64-yard burst and Rico Prestia's 11-yard touchdown pass to Garrett Gatz put Conant up 19-7 with 1:45 left in the third.
"We had other chances to score," said Conant coach Bill Modelski. "We didn't, and we let this one get away."
