Kennedy, Kenney lead the way for Warren
Blue Devils fans have been used to the offensive fireworks from a combination of Greg Kennedy and Tom Lindal, but in Warren's 34-6 win over Mundelein on Thursday in Gurnee, it was the combination of Kennedy and Pat Kenney.
Lindal only carried the ball four times (13 yards) for Warren (4-0), while Kennedy carried the workload, racking up 204 yards on 21 carries.
"Mundelein's defense took away what we do with Tommy," explained Warren Coach Dave Mohapp, "So we had Greg carry the load."
Lindal was still effective. He also had 2 receptions for 70 yards, including a 56 yard TD on a screen pass.
Kennedy had touchdown runs of 2 yards, 72 yards, and 35 yards.
Kenney, a sophomore quarterback, completed 8 of 18 passes for 163 yards and 2 touch downs.
"We are looking to get better in our passing game," Mohapp said of Kenney, who split snaps with junior QB Patrick Oliver. "We wanted to get both guys in for at least three series. Patrick did a nice job as well."
Down 14-0 in the second quarter, Mundelein (0-4) got on the board with a 50-yard interception return from defensive back Jake Pawlicki. But that was the only way Mundelein could score as Warren shut down the Mustangs' offense.
"Points against our defense is very low," Mohapp explained, "We did a very good job against their run."
Mundelein tried seven different ball carriers. The only ones that made any dent were quarterback Brian Santiago (9 carries, 23 yards) and AJ Spector (7 carries, 35 yards)
Warren also hit a couple of big plays after Mundelein miscues.
In the first quarter, the Lindal TD reception came one play after a punt. Later in the second quarter, one play after a Jon Duncan interception, Kennedy took a hand-off for a 72-yard touchdown. Then, in the third quarter, after forcing Warren to punt, Mundelein gave the Blue Devils the ball back when the Mustangs had 12 men on the field. The next play, Kennedy ran for his 35-yard touchdown.
It wasn't all good news for Warren. The Blue Devils lost starting wideout Kendell Harris in the first quarter to an ankle injury, and starting defensive lineman Luke Mueller to a foot injury.
With two minutes left, game misconducts were called on Warren's Trever Erbach and Mundelein's Kyle Medbery. Erbach will miss next week's game at Lake Forest and Medbery will miss next week's game against Wauconda.
