D-C upends Streamwood

Dundee-Crown junior Rebecca Wika is taking quick notice of the differences between junior varsity and varsity volleyball.

Wika is a fast learner. The junior led the Chargers with 6 kills and helped a late comeback in Game 2 as Dundee-Crown downed Streamwood 25-15, 25-22 in nonconference action at Streamwood Wednesday night.

"Everything is quicker," Wika said. "There are more aggressive hits. The intensity is higher."

After dropping the opening game 25-15, Streamwood (0-1) brought some intensity in its season opener. The Sabres took their first lead on a D-C hitting error to go up 7-6 before Lindsey Carroll took over the serve. Carroll would again use her serving skills to bring the Sabres back to within 23-22 late in the match.

"Lindsey Carroll was great with her serving tonight," Streamwood coach David Buehring said. "She came in at a key part of the match and put the ball where she needed to."

Carroll notched 2 of her 5 aces to put Streamwood ahead 9-6 and eventually give the hosts a 17-13 advantage. The senior added 3 kills and 5 digs in the loss.

Despite Carroll's efforts, it was Dundee-Crown junior Lauren Mosher who ended the match with an ace to give the Chargers the win.

After being down 17-13, Dundee-Crown (1-2) started to put the ball where it needed to as well. The Chargers roared back to take a 20-17 lead when Mosher tipped a ball right into the heart of the Sabres' defense. Mosher finished with a pair of kills during the 7-0 run that allowed the Chargers to end the match in 2 games.

"Lauren Mosher was hitting the ball really well on the outside," Chargers' coach Tracy Williams said. "Rebecca was hitting really well."

The Chargers jumped out to an early 15-4 lead in the opening game, with a slew of Chargers notching kills. The Sabres did come with 16-11 before Alexis Holm (3 kills) and Alyssa Sarrazine (8 digs) each recorded kills to put D-C up 18-11. Katie Cutinello (11 assists) ended the game with a pair of aces and finished with 3 in the last 5 points as D-C closed the game on a 5-0 run.

Tanna Svec (10 digs) led the defense for the Chargers. Melissa Oehlerking finished with 4 kills and 10 digs for the Sabres, who also got 3 kills from Julissa Alverez.
