Albano, Jacobs down Moline

Execution was the main game plan for Jacobs' football team as it took the field in its season opener against Moline on Friday night. When it came down to it, the Golden Eagles executed on both sides of the ball, overcoming turnovers with great defense en route to a 21-9 victory over the Maroons.

"For our first game of the year, I thought we executed very well," Jacobs' coach Dean Schlueter said. "The guys played hard and made plays when they had to and that is all you can ask for."

The Golden Eagles were the first to capitalize off of one of the six turnovers produced by both teams in the game. In its opening possession Jacobs set the tempo by running the ball 10 times and capped the drive on 1-yard touchdown run by Ben Albano. Albano would go onto lead both teams in rushing with 144 yards off of 24 carries.

The lead wouldn't last long however as Moline would tie the game on the ensuing possession on a 2-yard run by quarterback Mikel Wismer.

With the game tied at 7, Albano helped set up a second consecutive scoring drive with a 57-yard run. After the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 14-7 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Zach Bates, Jacobs' never looked back.

The Maroons were able to bring it to as close as 14-9, when a bad snap allowed the Maroons 2 points off of a safety, but it seemed whenever the Golden Eagles defense took the field, Moline (0-1) was unable to move the ball.

"Moline has a high powered offense that can score," said Schlueter. "But we did not allow the big plays and when our defense needed to make stops, they came up big and did."

The reigns of quarterback for the Golden Eagles were given to sophomore Jason Judson. Although he did not throw a single pass in the game, Judson did rush for 52-yards on 13 carries and scored the late touchdown to put the game away.

"I was really excited and nervous," Judson said, "but with the way our offensive line blocked for us today and the way our defense stepped up and made the plays when needed, it allowed me to relax and really have fun out there."
