Previewing: Hinsdale South

One look at Hinsdale South's offensive line and the goal is clear.

Eight hundred, sixty-five pounds don't lie. And that's only three players.

Four linemen return led by 6-foot-3, 280-pound tight end Cody Kuhlman, a third-year starter. Dane DeKing, Joe Czaja and Steve Murphy bring additional muscle to what should be a powerful ground game.

"We can block people," said Hornets coach Alex Bitto. "That's one thing we've got this year, is linemen."

The Hornets need much more, of course, to reach the playoffs after last year's disappointing two-win season. Eleven starters are back for the Hornets, including defensive linemen Jaleel White, 6-3 and 330 pounds, Derrick Page and Joe VanHorn.

Unlike past seasons when the Hornets relied on their linemen playing two ways, that won't be the case this year. While Kuhlman and DeKing will see time on both sides of the ball, the Hornets are deep enough to keep their key personnel fresh.

That'll be good news for a set of offensive skill players that's relatively inexperienced. Kevin Miller started three games at quarterback last year while gaining valuable experience. Garrett Vanhal was among the team's leading receivers.

With the strength up front, though, the Hornets will lean heavily on their running game. Devin Lee, a defensive standout, rushed for 150 yards against Leyden last year. Frank Jones and sophomore Emmanuel Morris also will contribute.

After allowing 40-plus points three times last year, five starters return to shore up the defense. In addition to the linemen, Jones, Lee and Jon Gregoire all received significant playing time last year.

Success, like with the offense, will depend on the push up front.

That's a great place to start with this squad.

"We need to control the line of scrimmage," Bitto said. "If we can do that, we'll be a much better team."
